When a Water Heater is Dangerous

Water Heater Back Draft

How dangerous is water heater backdraft? Here at Vincent Plumbing, we have noticed a higher percentage of water heater back draft issues lately. This may be due to an increase DIY projects or homeowner’s not choosing a licensed plumber to install their water heater.

Backdrafting is dangerous because exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide. When a water heater backdrafts, the combustion process changes, and the water heater may start generating high levels of carbon monoxide.

Clues that could indicate your water heater has a drafting issue:

  1. Melted plastic at the draft hood

  2. Corrosion at the top of the tank

  3. Moisture at the top of the tank

  4. Excessive condensation on cold water pipes in area of water heater

  5. Back pitched vent connector

Call us for a free inspection today! Home furnaces and water heaters are a major source of carbon monoxide poisoning, usually from poorly vented fuel sources or leaking vent pipes. Ideally, you should have your furnace and water heater inspected by a professional at least once a year.
