Old Cast Iron Drain Pipe Replacement: What We Found Inside the Walls of an Older Home in Mukwonago
When Old Cast Iron Drain Piping Fails
Older homes have plenty of character, but the plumbing hidden behind the walls can sometimes be a different story.
Vincent Plumbing & Heating recently opened up the plumbing in an older home and found severely deteriorated cast iron drain piping. What looked like a plumbing problem from the outside became much clearer once the walls and ceiling were opened.
The photos from this project show just how badly old cast iron can deteriorate from the inside out.
What We Found
Once the drain piping was exposed, our plumber found extensive corrosion and buildup inside the original cast iron piping.
One removed section tells the story particularly well. The interior opening had become heavily restricted by years of corrosion and buildup. Another section of pipe had developed a long crack along the pipe wall.
These conditions can contribute to:
Slow or repeatedly clogged drains
Leaking inside walls or ceilings
Sewer odors
Water damage
Reduced drain capacity
Recurring plumbing problems
Eventually, complete pipe failure
A cast iron pipe can sometimes look relatively solid from the outside while being severely deteriorated internally.
Why Does Old Cast Iron Pipe Deteriorate?
Cast iron was commonly used for drain, waste and vent piping in older homes. It is extremely durable, but it doesn’t last forever.
Over many decades, moisture, waste, minerals and corrosion can deteriorate the interior of the pipe. The inside surface becomes rough and scaled, which can restrict flow and catch debris.
Eventually, sections may crack, leak or become so deteriorated that replacement is a better long-term solution than another temporary repair.
Replacing Old Cast Iron With PVC
For this project, access had to be created through portions of the bathroom wall and ceiling so the deteriorated piping could be reached and removed.
The damaged cast iron was then replaced with new PVC drain piping.
Modern PVC provides a smooth interior surface, won’t rust like cast iron and can provide a dependable long-term solution when properly installed.
These before-and-after photos are a great example of why diagnosing the cause of a recurring drain problem matters. Clearing a blockage may restore drainage temporarily, but if the pipe itself is cracked, deteriorated or heavily restricted, the underlying problem remains.
Have an Older Home With Drain Problems?
If you own an older home and experience repeated drain backups, slow drains, unexplained leaks or sewer odors, the condition of the original drain piping may be worth investigating.
